How Pip, our AI mail elf, handles your messages.

Pip, our AI mail elf

Last updated: 24 October 2026.

Pip is an AI, not a person. When you send a private letter, postcard, hint, ask or reply, Pip retells it in his own words so your writing style is harder to recognize. Everything he writes is labelled “Retold by Pip, our AI mail elf”. You see his version before it goes, and you can edit or cancel it.

Pip runs on Claude Haiku, an AI model made by Anthropic. To retell a message, we send Anthropic only the text you wrote and one display name: the recipient's when a Santa writes to their giftee, the giftee's own when a giftee writes to their Santa, and the name of the person an ask, reply or hint is about. We never send a Santa's name, and we never send your email address, guest card, wishlist or plans.

Under Anthropic's terms as of Oct 2026, Anthropic doesn't use this text to train its AI models. It deletes it within 30 days, unless its safety systems flag it as breaking Anthropic's usage policy (then it can keep it for up to 2 years) or the law requires it to be kept longer.

Pip can make mistakes. He might change your meaning or get a detail wrong, so read his version before you send it. He doesn't make decisions about you and doesn't remember you between messages.

If Pip can't retell a message properly, for example he declines it or just repeats it back, it isn't sent. You can change it and try again.

If Pip is resting, your letter is saved and you can send it once he's back. Nothing is sent without him. A saved letter stays only in your browser on that device, never on our servers. It's deleted when you send it or sign out, and a saved letter is removed after 30 days.
